Why learn Spanish in Spain?

Spanish is the second most widely-spoken language in the world and by far the second most widely-spoken in the US after English. Speaking Spanish will obviously help you in your daily life when interacting with folks who are native Spanish speakers, but Spanish is also a great asset in the business world. Speaking someone else’s language is key to building trust because the effort required to learn the language is a strong sign of respect.

Spain is an excellent choice for a Spanish immersion course, not only because it’s the home of the Spanish language, but also because it’s safe, packed with interesting stuff to see, and guarantees a good mix of nationalities in the classroom.

Choose your Spanish course in Spain

Spanish language courses in Spain are designed for students of all levels, from beginners to advanced learners, who want to immerse themselves in the language and culture. Before arriving, you'll take an online Spanish test for provisional placement, followed by a short interview at the school to confirm your level. This ensures you're placed in the right class with students of a similar level and age, maximizing your learning experience.

Classes are taught in dedicated language schools with 10 to 15 students per class, led by native Spanish-speaking teachers. Whether your instructor is from Spain or Latin America, they hold an SFL (Spanish as a Foreign Language) qualification and have extensive experience in guiding students through grammar, vocabulary, and cultural exploration. The relaxed yet focused atmosphere allows for efficient learning, with a mix of instruction and practice.

Courses vary in intensity depending on your goals and schedule. Here’s an overview of the types of Spanish courses offered:

Spanish course type Lessons/week What will I learn?
Intensive Course 32 lessons A fast-track option focusing on all language skills: reading, writing, speaking, and listening.
General Course 26 lessons A well-rounded approach covering all key areas of Spanish with practical, real-life scenarios.
Basic Course 20 lessons (summer only) Emphasis on oral communication skills for handling everyday situations, with plenty of free time for cultural activities.

Frequently asked questions

How much does it cost to learn Spanish in Spain?

Prices for our Spanish courses in Spain start from USD$1,350 for a 2-week course, which includes your Spanish lessons, accommodation, meal plans, certifications, activities, and more. The cost does not cover your flights to and from Spain. For more information on our pricing, get your free brochure here.

What’s the best city to learn Spanish in Spain?

We have Spanish schools in two very different cities: Barcelona and Malaga. Each has its own flavor and culture that makes it completely unique. One of Spain's largest cities, Barcelona, is home to breathtaking modernist architecture, the vibrant Catalan cultural scene, and gorgeous beaches for sunning and swimming. Secondly, consider quiet Malaga, with warm winters, lovely beaches, and easy access to the beautiful Andalusian countryside. Our schools are centrally-located in all three cities, so whichever you choose, you'll have an amazing time learning Spanish in Spain.

Where will I stay during my Spanish language course?

You have four accommodation options for your Spanish course abroad: staying with a host family, in a student residence, in an on-campus residence, or arranging your own accommodation. Staying with a host family immerses you in both the Spanish language and culture, which is why host family accommodation is included in the price of all our Spanish courses in Spain.

However, if you prefer a different option, you can stay with classmates in one of our student residences near the school, or in Malaga, you have the option to stay on-campus at the school itself. If these options don’t suit your needs, you can always arrange your own accommodation with a friend, in a hotel, or by renting an apartment for the duration of your course.

Can I get an official diploma or certificate to prove my Spanish level?

Our Spanish schools in Spain will offer to give you a school certificate attesting to participation in their course. If you successfully complete an entire course cycle (often 6 to 8 weeks), our schools will also provide proof of that. But there is a more effective way to prove your Spanish level, and that is with an official international diploma. Our schools offer specialized Spanish courses for those preparing for the Diploma de Español como Lengua Extranjera (DELE), the Diploma Superior de Español de Los Negocios (DSEN) and the Diploma Intermedio de Español de Los Negocios (DIEN). Depending on your objectives, passing one of these exams and receiving the Spanish diploma to prove it may be your best choice.

Can I work in Spain during my Spanish course to help pay for expenses?

Only European citizens can work in Spain without a visa, but finding a part-time job that fits with a Spanish course schedule can be tricky. Some European students work in the evenings to help pay for their Spanish courses in Spain. Non-EU students staying in Spain for 6 months or more can sometimes find babysitting or English tutoring jobs for children that are undeclared to help them earn pocket money. Unfortunately, we can’t help you find that kind of job (it would be illegal). The best option to fund your Spanish course in Spain is to save up money at home so you’re sure to have enough to cover your expenses while you study abroad.

What does a typical day at your Spanish course in Spain with EF look like?

Start your day at 7:30 with breakfast and El Pais, then bike, bus, or walk to school.

Spanish classes begin at 9:00, with lessons covering grammar, discussions on topics like climate change, and practice in the computer lab. You’ll also learn about Spanish culture, such as the Fiesta Nacional de España.

After class, grab lunch with friends at a nearby café and explore the area, speaking Spanish the entire time. In the afternoon, enjoy a guided tour of Casa Mila or a visit to the beach.

By 7pm, return to your host family for dinner, finish your homework, watch a Spanish series, and relax before bed.

On the weekends, join one of our school's organized trips to other parts of Spain, including Sevilla, Granada or even Morocco.
