Roses & shields – International Women’s Day
Here one of our students and ambassadors Angelina, gives us a little insight into International Women’s Day:
Roses, in biological term, have spines to protect the flowers. When we look back in time, these lovely flowers usually represent female or women in poetry and art works. But women got their protection far later than roses.
The 8th of March is the International Women’s Day and it’s celebrated all around the world. Since those early years, International Women’s Day has assumed a new global dimension for women in developed and developing countries alike.
1909 is the first National Woman’s Day was observed in the United States on 28 February. The Socialist Party of America designated this day in honour of the 1908 garment workers’ strike in New York, where women protested against working conditions.
The growing international women’s movement, which has been strengthened by four global United Nations women’s conferences, has helped make the commemoration a rallying point to build support for women’s rights and participation in the political and economic arenas.
This year, 2017, The world has witnessed a significant change and attitudinal shift in both women’s and society’s thoughts about women’s equality and emancipation. Many from a younger generation may feel that ‘all the battles have been won for women’ while many feminists from the 1970’s know only too well the longevity and ingrained complexity of patriarchy.
With more women in the boardroom, greater equality in legislative rights, and an increased critical mass of women’s visibility as impressive role models in every aspect of life, one could think that women have gained true equality.
What can we do?
1.Give our thanks to our mothers and female relatives for their caring and love
2.Respect females you know
3.Join local women’s right organisation.
4.Donate money for the United Nation Women’s Right department.
5.Read books about women’s right and equality.
So make a difference, think globally and act locally!
Make everyday International Women’s Day.
Do your bit to ensure that the future for girls is bright, equal, safe and rewarding.
