What are you Reading? Five Fiction Books for Fall
Can you feel that crispness in the air yet? With Fall just around the corner, it’s starting to get darker and colder for our teachers based in the Northern Hemisphere. And you know what that means – it's the perfect time for cozying up with a brand new book!
Read on to find out what the EF Teach Online team has been reading recently.
Eduardo C. - All the Pretty Horses by Cormac McCarthy
All the Pretty Horses, the first book in the Border Trilogy, takes readers on a journey with John Grady Cole: a young man exploring loss and his own identity as he ventures into the Mexican landscape. I read this beautifully written coming-of-age story in Spanish, but it was originally published in English.
Manli L. - Thursday Murder Club by Richard Osman
The stories in this book revolve around a group of pensioners who solve murders together. As a native Chinese speaker, I find the books incredibly easy to understand. I’m amazed by the author’s ability to describe the characters and stories in a way that is funny, clever, and warm. These books truly captivated me, and once I started reading, I couldn’t put them down.
Hana M. - Happy Place by Emily Henry
If you're looking for a light read while sipping your tea or coffee, I recommend this book. It explores the complicated relationship between two people trying to navigate life while balancing their jobs, friendships, personal struggles, and family dynamics.
Carmen K. - Endurance: Shackleton's Incredible Voyage by Alfred Lansing
This story takes the reader on a journey along with the Endurance, one of the first ships to make an expedition to Antarctica back in the early 20th Century. Contrary to its namesake, the ship unfortunately sank before it reached the icy continent. However, the ship's crew and their leaders, Shackleton and Worsley, miraculously managed to survive after countless dangerous and life-threatening events. This story leaves the reader with a genuine appreciation for life and the grit of the human spirit.
Hana M. - Never Let Me Go by Kazuo Ishiguro
This book is an eye-opener to the different versions of life one can find themselves in. It is a dystopian novel that delves into themes of identity, friendship, love, alternate realities, and the ethical implications of cloning.
