Golden Week Adventures: How We Celebrated
Every October 1st, China comes alive with vibrant celebrations for National Day.
But this isn’t just a single day of festivities - it's the start of “Golden Week”, a 7-day holiday which many people pack with travel, reunions, volunteer work, and more. From bustling cities to countryside escapes, millions of people across China take this time to disconnect from work, relax, and recharge.
Let’s find out what how our teachers in China spent their Golden Week!Aria Li
During the National Day holiday, I served as a bridesmaid at my college roommate’s wedding. This holiday is very popular for weddings, as it allows relatives and friends to easily arrange their schedules to attend. After three years apart, my friend and I reunited, and it was as if we had stepped back in time to college! Witnessing her special moment was truly touching. The pure joy and the feeling of not having to be adults for a while was simply wonderful!

This year, I used my holiday as an opportunity to spend time with my family in Japan. We gathered around the dinner table, sharing stories and laughing over fond memories. In Japan, the serene environment and the fresh air invigorated my senses. Also, I went to watch the concert of JJ Lin, who has been my idol from a very young age! My holiday was an incredible experience that not only allowed me to unwind and relax, but also broadened my horizons and enriched my life.

I had somewhat of a staycation for the National Holiday! I had just moved home at the beginning of September, and as I’m sure you know, unpacking and settling in can take... forever. So, I was quite looking forward to the holiday because I would finally get to settle into my new place! It's not too big, so I need to use every corner it has - this is where IKEA really helped. My multiple trips there were quite fruitful as it offered so many gadgets that helped me to organize my home. So, if you haven't been to your local IKEA store for a while, you might want to check it out again, especially if you, like me, work remotely.

This Golden Week I got crafty! First, I knitted a Halloween sock - perfect for the upcoming spooky season. Then, I took an online oil pastel lesson and began exploring the colorful world of art. It was messy, but amazing! I felt so inspired and enjoyed the creative process without feeling rushed. Each project allowed me to express myself in different ways, and it was really satisfying to take photos of my work. Fully immersing myself in knitting and art made this holiday a blast!

Over the National Holiday, I had the pleasure of revisiting Jeju Island. The island’s tranquility was beyond my expectations, providing a peaceful retreat from the hustle and bustle of daily life.
The vast expanse of the ocean and the majestic volcanic rocks left me in awe. The natural beauty of Jeju is truly captivating, with its dramatic landscapes sculpted by the forces of nature. One of the island’s most renowned attractions is the Tuff Cove. This unique formation, resembling a bowl, is a testament to the volcanic eruption that occurred there over 2000 years ago.
I also had the opportunity to visit the Stone Cultural Park, where I was immersed in the rich cultural heritage of Jeju. The park is home to an impressive collection of “Dol hareubang,” the stone grandfather statues that are iconic of Jeju’s culture.
For anyone fascinated by the mysteries of volcanoes and the geological wonders they create, Jeju Island is an ideal destination. It offers not only a glimpse into the volcanic past but also a chance to experience the island’s unique culture and natural splendor. Whether you’re a geology enthusiast, a nature lover, or simply seeking a peaceful escape, Jeju has much to offer and is definitely worth exploring.

During this year’s Golden Week, my family and I embarked on a trip to Beijing. We started our adventure by climbing the Great Wall, a symbol of China’s ancient history and resilience. We also wandered through the narrow alleys of Beijing’s Hutongs, a network of traditional lanes and courtyard residences that have been preserved amidst the modern development of Beijing. We also indulged in some of Beijing’s culinary delights, including the famous Peking Duck and hotpot. Absolutely delicious! However, the most memorable moment of our trip was undoubtedly the flag-raising ceremony. The sheer scale and precision of the ceremony was awe-inspiring! We experienced such an amazing trip – a journey into the heart of Chinese culture and history.
